Thank you for stopping by "Creating Gen-Y Magic." This is the first post in a series that will showcase the leaders of this generation and how they are creating magic in the lives of their co-workers, their clients, in their community and in their own lives. The first post is from Jun Loayza, a Gen-Y enthusiast, Brazen Careerist Blogger and Chief Marketing Officer of Future Delivery, a company that is building fun and productive technology for students and young professionals. If you are interested in contributing to this series, or know of anyone whose story creates magic, please click here. Enjoy.
A battle rages within my heart. On one hand, I have my family, friends, and girlfriend; on the other hand I have my baby – Future Delivery. Who should I devote my time to? Must I choose one over the other? Isn't there a way for me to make all of them happy? These are the constant questions that test the heart and determination of a young entrepreneur. In the end, it's quite simple: one lives, while the other one dies. I must choose my company over my girlfriend, friends, or family. I'm referring to very early stage startups where the team is about 5-people big and every team member wears 5 different hats in the company. It's a tough life, but we do it to make our BIG dreams come true. We refuse to succumb to the corporate, comfortable life controlled by "the man." We refuse to go into cruise control mode and let life just happen to us. This is why Gen-Y entrepreneurs have the Magic. We sacrifice more for our dreams than any other type of person.
My company's ultimate goal is to help Gen-Y find their own Magic. We help undergraduates and young professionals figure out what they want to do career-wise and how to get there by making career and personal development fun. FD Career turns peoples' lives into a real life role playing game. Every time you gain an internship, get a high GPA, or become a leader of an organization, you gain experience points and level-up on the site. As you level-up, you gain prestige, get new abilities and access to new areas of the site, and will eventually be able to recruit with more prestigious firms. We reward the go-getters who have been productive with their lives by giving them a place to share their experience and thought-knowledge; we help people who are young and inexperienced by laying out a pathway that they can take to discover what they want to be and how they can become it.
If you're interested in Management Consulting, then you can choose the Path of Business where you'll undertake Business Analysis Cases that challenge your analytical and strategic thinking. If you pass the quest, then you gain experience points and level-up. The same goes with people who want to do marketing, software engineering, or entrepreneurship. They can take quests that will develop their skill-set and concretely demonstrate their new skill-set on the FD Career website.
Our generation is about empowerment. FD Career empowers the Y-Generation by giving them the platform to demonstrate their real life productivity. Those who have been most productive and influential in their lives will gain prestige by being on the top of the Leaderboard.
Our goals do not lie with money. We want to enrich the lives of other Y-Gens and motivate them to be productive with having fun. Those who have tasted entrepreneurship and truly loved it know the addiction that I feel. If my company fails, I know that I will start another company with the same team. I'm currently writing this sitting next to my team in our apartment/office. We are four Gen-Yers pushing and willing each other to succeed. This is what makes life worth living. This is Magic.

Thank you for sharing your magic story with us. I believe you can have a demanding career, a good marriage with children and other things you decide to do. Even if you are working long hours and many days a week on your start up company. I would say that you focus on your health, your company and your wife and children. It is not always how much time you spend with your wife or friends but the quality of that time. Learning to say NO is a good thing too so you don't stretch yourself beyond reason. I am sure you will be successful because you are thinking about the right things in the right way. You will figure it all out. Doing what you are passionate about and what makes you happy is one of the main filters you should use for decision making...Good Luck...Lee Cockerell.
