Leadership Thought of the Week #4

Every week over on LeeCockerell.com, Lee shares a Leadership thought, just something to think about in your daily life. Every week, we will be sharing with you that thought and adding some insight into how that plays into the Gen-Y lifestyle. So without further ado, this week's leadership thought is:

An Excellent Formula For Success
A healthy environment + strong relationships = commitment.

I think Lee really resonates with Gen-Y standards here. We are all happy at work when we are in a comfortable and healthy environment. When you come to work happy, you perform better and increase your daily output while removing the stresses that come with a day job.

The second half hits home too, in that it deals with people and our interactions with these people. Some people will even admit to staying in a position, even through dislike of the job, for the people around them. Developing personal relationships in vital to our happiness and progress in not only work, but in life.

When you put these 2 factors (environment + relationships) together and are confident in them and the situations they bring about, you are really setting the tone for long term commitment for not only your employer, but for your family, your start-up and really your peace of mind.

So guys, do you think these 2 factors really equal commitment, or do they signal something else? Sound off in the comments and let's get the magic started!

Thanks for the post. I would agree that those two are important ingredients in both being successful and committed to one's job. But I don't think that's the complete picture.

I would add that I have to enjoy the work that I am doing in order to be fully committed. I can be in a great environment with terrific people who support me, but if I am not passionate about what I am doing, I will never realize my success potential. Unfortunately, many people get into job functions that they cannot fully engage themselves in. I can only hope that I find good environments, good people, and work that I love as I continue in my career.

Matt - thanks for dropping by. I think the passion and enjoyment comes from the environment as well. We all have the ability to choose the environments we put ourselves in. When you go to the interview, you get to see the building, the aesthetics and the environment. Sometimes we are in a bind and need a paycheck, but we ultimately choose to go to work everyday.
